Govt to tackle problem of road works

26/01/2012

The government is set to hand councils extra powers that should reduce the amount of delays caused by road works in the UK.

Transport minister Norman Baker has announced proposals that will allow local authorities to charge utility firms up to £2,500 a day to dig up highways during peak times, when they cause the most disruption.

It is hoped this will incentivise companies to carry out work quickly and at times when the roads are quieter.

Mr Baker observed that as well as causing an immense annoyance to commuters, jams created by road works cost the UK economy an estimated £4 billion a year.

"It is incredibly frustrating to find vital roads being dug up in the middle of the rush hour or, even worse, traffic lanes closed when no one is even carrying out any work," he stated.

Last month, the Department for Transport also approved £27 million of funding for 3D laser scanning technology that should enable police to collect information at crash scenes quicker, in order to reduce the amount of time roads are closed as a result of accidents.
