The Toyota Yaris has been named Green Car of the Year 2008 by the Environmental Transport Association (ETA).
Beating off competition from 1,300 other cars the Yaris was chosen as the overall winner and came top in the super-mini category.
The Dodge SRT-10 sports car, with its 8.3-litre engine capable of 500bhp, was voted the least environmentally-friendly car examined by the ETA.
Andrew Davis, director at the ETA, said: "The discrepancy between the best and worst - the greenest and the least green cars in Britain today is striking.
"The concern is that people are buying cars that are much too big for their real needs."
According to the ETA, which has been campaigning for green motoring since 1990, more and more people are making an informed decision about the cars they buy, particularly in terms of their environmental impact.
But 84 per cent of British motorists are unprepared for the impending change to road-tax, which from 2009 willbe based on a car's emissions.
All the cars examined for the ETA's buyers guide were judged on their power, emissions, fuel efficiency and the amount of noise they produce.
