Car loan customers keen to save money as the credit crunch tightens its grip can reduce their fuel consumption significantly by changing the way they drive, according to the Institute of Advanced Motorists (IAM).
Thinking twice before putting their foot to the floor is one way to cut costs, the organisation suggested.
It stated: "Edging over the motorway speed limit to 80 mph saves very little time, but it will cost typically around three or four pence per mile more."
Motorists were also advised to make the effort to drive smoothly and to turn their engines off while in traffic jams.
Furthermore, reverse parking was cited as a way to reduce costs because it allows drivers getting back in the car to move off straight away.
This means the engine heats up more quickly and once warm a car uses less fuel, IAM explained.
Last month, the group welcomed figures from the Department for Transport which revealed road deaths dropped by seven per cent in 2007 compared with the previous year.
