Savvy servicing skills required by drivers

Motorists in the UK need to make sure they wise up over getting their vehicles serviced, according to new research.

A study from Automotive Technician Accreditation (ATA) has found that out of 1,338 surveyed drivers, 52 per cent were unaware of when their models need to be taken in.

Car credit customers may find that this is a particular problem when it comes to car insurance customers, as cover firms could charge them more should they have an accident.

The ATA, regulated by the Institute of the Motor Industry, has now set up a scheme allowing motorists to check when their service is due online, in addition to assessing the quality of the garage.

"It can be difficult for consumers to find a reliable garage, so we welcome the ATA scheme as a means to reassure motorists that their technician has been properly trained and adheres to a code of conduct," said National Consumer Council representative Steve Brooker.
