The Golf BlueMotion which is expected to be available in the UK from mid-2009 emits 99 grams per kilometre of CO2 and offers fuel consumption of 74.3 miles per gallon.
However, for drivers who are reluctant to compromise on power, it can also hit 62 miles per hour (mph) in 11.3 seconds and has a maximum speed of 117 mph.
Volkswagen awards its BlueMotion label to the most economical models in each of its passenger car ranges.
Those cars which have BlueMotion versions include the Touran, Sharan, Passat and Jetta.
Meanwhile, after notching up sales of 3.31 million vehicles during the first six months of 2008, Volkswagen has clinched third spot in terms of global deliveries, edging ahead of rivals Ford.
