A new Motor Industry Code of Practice for Service and Repair has been unveiled today at the Office of Fair Trading in London.
More than 5,500 garages have shown interest in the new scheme backed by the government, which aims to promote and safeguard consumers by driving out unnecessary and unfair practices in the industry.
Participating garages must subscribe to the code set out by Motor Codes and commit to honest and fair service, transparent pricing and a straightforward complaints procedure.
"Industry response to the Code has been extremely encouraging, with thousands of outlets already committed to signing up prior to launch," said Chris Mason, Motor Codes Director.
"We expect many more garages to log-on to the website and subscribe over the next few months before we launch to consumers in the summer," he added.
Customers will be able to find out if a garage is registered with the scheme before taking their car there to be repaired.
And with consumers offered more rights than required by the law, there will be less financial burden especially for people with car credit if work is not carried out properly.
