Concerns that the new car market would suffer have proven to be unfounded as a new report shows the sector is as healthy as ever.
According to the most recent figures from Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT), more new cars were registered in April 2008 than have ever been before, motors-merseyside.co.uk reports.
The report revealed that overall, registrations had increased year-on-year by 3.2 per cent to 175,668 units during April and that diesel vehicles were especially popular, taking a 45.4 per cent share of the market its largest ever recorded.
Commenting on the figures, SMMT chief executive Paul Everitt said efficient motoring was becoming a major concern for drivers in light of higher fuel prices.
"The latest registration figures show diesel-powered vehicles have hit their highest monthly market share on record, alongside a stronger focus on super-efficient small cars," he added.
During last month, the website reports that the Ford Focus was once again the highest selling new car on the market.
