There are a number of things drivers can look out for that signal it is time to look for car finance, it has been suggested.
According to Mark Larsen, a franchise training manager with Car-X Auto Service, a number of signs will indicate a car is ready for the scrap heap - which could see motorists back in the market for a car loan.
Mr Larsen told thedenverchannel.com that oil leaks are a significant sign that a vehicle may be heading for expensive repair work and engine noises are always worth a through check.
However, he noted that not all problems are fatal for a used car and adds that there is no need to panic every time a used car needs to be serviced.
"Electrical, battery and overheating problems frequently can be taken care of with relatively cheap and easy repairs and put you back on the road," the site concludes.
