Drivers in the UK need to understand the damage they can do to their cars by bumping up and scuffing kerbs, a new report has warned.
TyreSafe issued the warning and added that more and more motorists were finding they had to have tyres removed and replaced as a result of damage caused by seemingly minor knocks.
As well as physically damaging the tyres, the firm warned that bumping into kerbs could cause axels to become misaligned. The firm explained that this might cause uneven tread wear.
The firm added that power steering in most modern cars meant that drivers often hit kerbs while parking.
"Drivers consider that the presence of a kerb is not an obstacle to manoeuvring a car into a tight spot, which may lead to a tyre's sidewall being pinched between the kerb and the wheel, or the steering system becoming misaligned," a statement from the company explained.
"A driver may not be aware of any problem associated with such a manoeuvre until either thetread pattern shows rapid and irregular wear or a bulge appears on the tyre sidewall, therefore increasing the likelihood of an accident."
TyreSafe was until recently called the Tyre Industry Council and has worked for the past 16 years to promote "awareness of the importance of the dangers of defective and worn tyres".
