Drivers, including car loan customers, are putting their lives and those of other road users at risk by not checking their tyres on a regular basis, TyreSafe has warned.
Recent figures from the Department for Transport revealed defective or under-inflated tyres were a contributory factor in the deaths of 43 motorists last year and also played a part in a further 984 accidents.
A new survey by TyreSafe found less than half of motorists check their tyre pressure every month.
Chairman Rob Beddis said motorists need to carry out these straightforward safety tests at least every four weeks.
After pointing out that nearly one life a week was lost in 2007 as a result of poorly maintained tyres, he stated: "This tragic loss of life is unnecessary and could have been avoided by carrying out simple, regular checks."
Last month, TyreSafe made a series of digitally animated tyre safety lessons available on its website.
