The government may soon be paying motorists to take to the road in an environmentally-friendly fashion.
Car loans customers could receive grants from officials in order to trade their gas-guzzling models for cars which have less of an impact on the environment.
This comes as road tax costs for Band F vehicles such as the VW Passat, Citroen C8 and Renault Espace are expected to rise to £455 per year by 2010.
But Tim Yeo from the Conservative Party has stated that such grants should not exclude Britons.
He said: "The treasury must also work to ensure these changes are not unfair to vulnerable groups. This includes looking at paying people to trade in their existing high-emission cars."
Those who do opt for an environmentally-friendly vehicle will be following in the footsteps of Hollywood star Cameron Diaz, who drives a Toyota Prius.
