British car manufacturer Land Rover will be boosting its range and its seating capacity, with a seven-seat model.
Insiders told Auto Car that the seven-seat Land Rover, known as 'Project L486', will be unveiled in 2012.
It will be based on the Freelander platform, but will be substantially different to look at and is expected to be a similar size to the discovery, according to the leading car news website.
The new all-wheel drive vehicle will be more 'road focused', but it will have off-road aids including hill descent control, traction control and stability control, all operated from a Terrain Response switch.
Production of the new car will be at the Halewood plant in Merseyside, alongside the Freelander and Jaguar X-Type.
Land Rover launched its first 4x4 in 1948.
The Freelander is the company's biggest selling 4x4 in the UK, alongside its Discover, Range Rover, Range Rover Sport and the entry-level 4x4, the Defender.
