Honda's FCX Clarity has left the production line in Japan, making it the first hydrogen fuel cell car on the market.
After 19 years of development, Honda presented three US customers with their zero emission vehicle at the line-off ceremony today.
Honda will be running a three-year lease-sales program for the early Clarity cars and among the first to sign up are actress Jamie Lee Curtis and her husband Christopher Guest.
John Kingston, environment manager for Honda UK, said: "The arrival of the first hydrogen fuel cell car is particularly significant during this time of rapidly increasing oil prices.
The fuel cell stack at the heart of the FCX Clarity combines hydrogen and oxygen, creating electrical energy to power the car.
Water is the only by-product from the reaction, so there is no CO2 or other damaging emissions.
