High fuel costs mean over half of motorists 'would car-share'

Car sharing would be considered by 51 per cent of drivers because of high fuel costs, new research has found.

For those looking to purchase a car loan or seek car finance advice, the news could be useful as it can provide a way to share the cost of motoring for work or leisure.

According to a survey by AA Insurance, 11 per cent of people currently share a car more than once a week and 60 per cent of those attributed their choice to the price of petrol.

Environmental issues were cited by 34 per cent, who said they wanted to reduce their emissions.

"Car sharing is something that we really believe in - not only is it a good way to reduce emissions and congestion on the road, but can also save on motoring costs," explained AA president Edmund King.

In the future, this option might also mean a quicker journey to a destinationif the UK follows America's example of providing lanes specifically for the use of car-sharers.

The US calls these designated lanes car pool lanes.
