More than 50 per cent of drivers who took part in a uSwitch survey were bamboozled by traffic light signals not knowing what an amber light on its own means.
Alarmingly traffic light confusion wasn't the only foggy patch in motorists' Highway Code knowledge, according to the new research.
One in three drivers didn't know what the national speed limit was and many said they were unsure of the speed limit in built up areas and relied on speed limit signs to know how fast they should be driving.
uSwitch asked more than 2,500 motorists 16 questions on basic driving theory, which is covered in the Driving Standards Agency theory test taken by every new learner-driver.
Of those tested, eight per cent failed to get a single answer right and only one per cent of respondents answered every question correctly.
Eight out of ten drivers more than 32 million couldn't remember the shape of a stop sign and 12 per cent of motorists had no idea what the shortest stopping distance is when travelling at 70mph.
Speeding cause nearly 8,000 accidents a year 14 per cent of which are fatal and disobeying give way or stop signs causes 5,500 accidents every year.
The Driving Standards Agency is changing the theory test on June 1st to make sure drivers know how to use their windscreen wipers and fog lights.
