When it comes to buying a new car the majority of British motorists are left confused by car companies' low-carbon claims.
According to independent research published by the Nice Car Company, more than three-quarters of people were confused by low-carbon claims on advertising.
More than eight out of ten people surveyed by Nice had no idea how much CO2 their car emitted.
Even in London, where the proposed congestion charge changes were to be based on CO2 emissions, 72 per cent of car owners were unaware of the CO2 output of their car.
But car loan customers unaware of their car's CO2 emissions can rest assured that 87 per cent of those surveyed said there should be more control over green claims in advertising.
Julian Wilford, co-founder of the Nice Car Company, said: "We're not surprised by the results.
"Green advertising claims are a bit of a free-for-all at the moment."
Nice is set to unveil its Ze-O all-electric car at the British International Motor Show next week.
