Government puts brakes on road tax u-turn

Gordon Brown has met with oil bosses in Scotland to discuss rising fuel costs – but there was no sign the government would give in to demands to cut fuel duty and road tax.

Despite a two-mile long protest by lorry drivers in London on Tuesday over increasing fuel prices, the prime minister has played down a u-turn on fuel tax saying the cost of petrol is a long-term global problem.

A spokesman for the prime minister said: "Of course we understand the concerns consumers face, but we also need to take into account the need to ensure economic stability, to fund public services and to promote energy efficiency."

The price of diesel has risen by 30 per cent in the last 12 months and a recent report by Swift Cover shows that the fuel is now the third largest monthly expense for UK families.

Increased living costs have caused consumers to tighten their belts, and Labour Party MPs have put pressure on Gordon Brown to rethink the planned 2p hike in fuel tax.

Government plans to develop two new oil fields in the North Sea have been given the go-ahead in a bid to increase the supply of crude.
