British prime minister Gordon Brown's vision that motorists will be driving electric or hybrid cars by 2020 is misconceived, according to the Environmental Transport Association (ETA).
Gordon suggests that increasing fuel tax will make a complete switch to alternative fuels possible within 12 years.
But the ETA said that fuel efficient hybrid vehicles are out of reach for the majority of British citizens, with a Toyota Prius costing £18,000.
A spokesperson for the ETA said: "Many government ministers already have the use of a Toyota Prius hybrid car.
"[But] high motoring taxes cannot cajole every British driver into an electric car if the market is not ready."
Car loan customers might like to know that more and more fuel efficient cars are making their way onto the market and prices are coming down as a result.
Ford models have seen a 38 per cent increase in sales as a result of the introduction of fuel efficient, sub 120g/km CO2 emitting cars, according to the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders.
