Ford's Econetic voted 'Green car of the Year'

Ford has won the ultimate green accolade from Whatgreencar? with its diesel Econetic.

The 1.6-litre Focus performed better than the site's benchmark hybrid car, the Toyota Prius, to drive away with the Green Car of the Year 2008 award.

Six Whatgreencar? judges voted unanimously for Ford's family car over 26 other environmentally-friendly models.

The Econetic is capable of 65.6mpg and produces 115g/km of CO2.

Judge and Whatgreencar? editor Dr Ben Lane said: "With the fuel efficient Ford Focus Econetic, all new car buyers have the opportunity to purchase a more environmentally-friendly car that meets the average motorist's needs."

The ratings run from 0 zero, with zero being the least polluting.

The Econetic came top of the family-car class with a score of 33, and produced less CO2 emissions than the lowest rated hybrid.

Whatgreencar? recommends the Econetic to UK motorists and at £16,050 it is a top environmentally-friendly choice for car loan customers.

Ford has said it will release a sub 100g/km of CO2 Fiesta early next year.
