Motorists looking to secure car finance for their first vehicle may do well to think small, it has been suggested.
According to the British Insurance Brokers' Association, it makes sense for newly-qualified drivers to avoid high-performance models.
It warned inexperienced road users may struggle to cope in a more powerful car and could end up being involved in an accident.
The organisation suggested people who have just passed their test should concentrate on getting to grips with driving unaccompanied.
Head of technical services Peter Staddon commented: "If you have a smaller car it could help to build up your no claims bonus and that is something we try and encourage young drivers to do."
Mr Staddon added newly-qualified motorists did not have to worry about being priced out of the insurance market.
He said the industry is extremely innovative and is always coming up with freshideas on how to offer cover that suits every pocket.
