A helicopter armed with a camera is being used to track motorists breaking the speed limit in Essex.
The initiative is being run by Essex county council and employs state-of-the-art number plate recognition technology in order to identify those drivers acting outside of the law.
Essex Police has commented that it thinks the helicopter's use will give officials the chance to build a bank of evidence against speeders.
But car credit customers could find their motor insurance policies become more expensive if they are caught out, as cover firms often increase costs if they consider motorists a risk.
"It will also support specific road safety operations by providing information and intelligence to officers on the ground in addition to the helicopter's ability to disrupt and detect travelling criminals," said Senior Traffic Management Officer Adam Pipe.
Department for Transport figures show that some 2,493 people were killed on British roads in 2007.
