Drivers told 'shop for what you need'

Motorists looking to buy a new or used car have been advised that being realistic about what they need is the best way to start.

According to an article for thestreet.com, many drivers are tempted by optional extras that can be bought later at a "much lower price" and some may opt for a model that is beyond their requirements.

Lauren Tara LaCapra, a writer for the site, states that a single person would not need an SUV, a driver with a family would be unwise to opt for a sports car and for those on a budget" a Maybach DAI is probably over the top".

However, she notes that savings can be made if the buyer shops around, is prepared to haggle and selects the right model initially.

"Before looking at the latest models, figure out how much you can afford each month and stick to the plan. Make sure to factor in monthly payments, insurance, maintenance and [fuel]," she adds.

Motorpoint advised this week that drivers with car finance were increasingly opting for small, more fuel-efficient cars.
