Car credit customers in the UK have to pay out extra in order to cover those without a car insurance policy, new research has found.
A total bill of £500 million is footed by drivers because of those breaking the law in such a way, which equates to around £31 per motorist, according to YouGov statistics published by comparethemarket.com.
It added that 12 per cent of people had been in a crash with an uncovered motorist, while 68 per cent have taken responsibility and liability for the crime.
Comparethemarket.com head of insurance Jeremy Moll remarked that prices will drop when crime rates fall.
"At present motor policies are hit by the knock on effect of uninsured drivers and the financial implications they create; so any steps to deter uninsured drivers would be a move in the right direction," remarked the official.
The Fraud Bureau recently warned motorists against a recent rise in staged car accidents, designed to con innocent drivers.
