Advice on how to secure the best car finance deal this season has been given by consumer watchdog magazine Which? Car.
Although buying a nearly new or second-hand motor can often provide good value, certain savings can be made on new models, the publication suggested, going on to list some discounts potential car buyers should look to achieve when on the forecourt.
Some 28 per cent off (about £6,000) should be the target for Ford Focus buyers, while those going for something a bit pricier such as the Audi A8 could save 19 per cent (approximately £15,100).
A Mazda RX-8 has a target discount of 21 per cent, which is equal to about £5,100.
"Most buyers will be going for second-hand cars this year," explained Richard Headland, editor of the magazine.
"But bear in mind that if you can match our target discount, some new cars won't cost much more to run than used cars."
Recent research from Which? Car published last November summarised what vehicles on the market offered greener driving options for less than £10,000.
Examples included the Fiat Panda 1.3 Multijet Dynamic five-door and the Citroen C1 1.0i Vibe three-door.
