Car loan customers buying a new vehicle need to think about how their choice of colour could impact on how much value the model retains, according to HPI.
The valuation group has warned opting for the latest fashionable shade may not do drivers any favours when they come to trade the motor in.
Alan Senior from the company said colour is a key factor in determining the price of used cars.
Black is a good choice because it always proves popular regardless of make or model, he suggested.
However, he said white could put some potential buyers off, as it is a colour people either love or hate.
Mr Senior added: "Some colours work well on sporty models, but are bad news on larger saloons or hatchbacks."
Previously, HPI reported people should not necessarily rule out the possibility of buying a car which has been declared a write off as some such vehicles are still roadworthy.
