Car finance customers who are keen to follow in the footsteps of celebrities like Leonardo DiCaprio and Cameron Diaz by buying an environmentally-friendly car in the next few months may find they have less choice than they were expecting.
A regulation which would have forced manufacturers to cut their models average emissions to 130g/km has been ruled unlawful.
The European Union parliament's legal affairs committee expressed concerns about how fines from carmakers would be collected and what the revenue would be used for.
Jay Nagley from Clean Green Cars described the decision as "extremely serious".
He explained the EU wanted to avoid creating a situation where countries started setting different CO2 emissions limits.
There will be a vote on October 20th so decide whether the rules should be adopted.
In other news, Clean Green Cars said the manufacturers whose sales had suffered most in August were those with the highest CO2 emitting vehicles.
