Motorists, including car loans customers, are being encouraged by the government to get involved in the biggest road sign review for 40 years.
The Department for Transport has decided it is time for an overhaul in order to help improve safety, cut emissions and reduce congestion.
Transport minister Rosie Winterton said the government was keen to employ the latest technology to ensure motorists, pedestrians and cyclists were confident about using roads safely.
She added the government was also keen to implement any changes without cluttering up streets with unnecessary signs.
The AA has welcomed the announcement.
President Edmund King stated: "Clear, concise, relevant road signs help reduce congestion, CO2, frustration and accidents."
He also said he would be seeking the views of AA members on how to bring the UK's road signs into the 21st century.
In other news, the Department for Transport announced earlier this month that new motorists would be given advice on cutting emissions and saving fuel during their practical driving test.
