People who have taken out a car loan to buy some new wheels need to ensure they maintain it properly, Motor Codes has claimed.
The group said, although household budgets are stretched for some motorists at the moment, skipping a vehicle's annual health check may turn out to be a false economy.
According to the organisation, a typical service will set a driver back about £125.
However, it warned repairs which become necessary as a result of neglect could prove substantially more expensive.
Motor Codes stated those people with older cars had to be particularly vigilant about maintaining their vehicles, adding a regular service history would help a motor retain more of its original value.
Director Chris Mason insisted: "If you don't carry out scheduled maintenance or fail to have repairs carried out promptly, you could eventually end up paying more."
Car loan customers who are looking for a garage to carry out their annual service may be interested to hear a new code of practice for such companies was launched this summer.
