Motorists, including car finance customers, are more likely to drive without insurance if they live in big cities, according to the British Insurance Brokers' Association (Biba).
Graeme Trudgill from Biba said this was because "buying insurance in the middle of Birmingham or mid-London is … extremely expensive compared to if you're living in a nice village in Wales."
He made these comments in response to a study by the Motor Insurance Bureau (MIB) which found the main hotspots for uninsured drivers fell within major cities.
Mr Trudgill explained people paid more for insurance in densely populated areas because they were more likely to fall victim to car crime and they were also at an increased risk of being involved in an accident.
However, he stated cost was not an excuse to get behind the wheel without adequate cover.
Last year, police in the UK seized 150,000 uninsured cars, vansand motorbikes.
