Personalised registration plates have become a popular Valentine's gift in recent years, according to DVLA.
With many people relying on car finance rather than savings in order to be able to afford a vehicle, it may seem that an individual number plate is a luxury too far.
However, most plates cost nowhere near the record £397,500 that a motorist paid for the privilege of owning S1 in September last year.
In fact, they are often priced at a level which makes them accessible to present buyers - and around 20 per cent of personalised registrations are purchased as gifts.
Damian Lawson, DVLA Personalised Registrations' marketing manager, revealed that the build up to Valentine's Day is a particularly busy time for the organisation, which is why its website now contains a special feature to help buyers identify the most romantic plates.
"While the regular plates featuring Xs and K155 are there to be had, the new search system ensures that extra personal touch in a flash," he explained.
