British motorists could save money by checking over their car before submitting it for an MOT, according to car manual specialist Haynes.
The firm said more than a fifth of cars failed their MOT in 2007 and of those, 271,000 failed because of lighting faults.
J Haynes, vice chairman and managing director of Haynes, said: "It takes very little time to check a car over before submitting it for an MOT test.
"Basic faults such as lights not working can easily be sorted out before the test."
Haynes has issued a list of checks motorists can carry out before paying for an MOT, including testing the handbrake, checking tyre tread depth and ensuring the windscreen is free from cracks.
Haynes publishes car manuals for 300 UK cars and has sold more than 150 million since 1960.
