Know the law, have all your documents and be prepared for a break down, are some of the tips offered by the Institute of Advanced Motorists (IAM) for drivers taking to the road abroad this summer.
Whether driving your own vehicle or hiring abroad, regulations on foreign roads can vary wildly according to the IAM.
Most countries have similar legislation to the UK, but it is worth getting to grips with local restrictions and regulations before taking to the road.
For example the drink driving limit in Germany is 50mg per 100ml, compared with 80mg per 100ml in the UK.
Some countries expect every driver to carry certain items in the event of a breakdown.
In France drivers are expected to have a yellow jacket and a first aid kit is compulsory in Croatia.
And car loan customers should be aware that speed camera detectors are illegal in some countries, including Switzerland and Germany.
The Foreign and Commonwealth Office recommends checking your car insurance policy before driving abroad to ensure you are completely covered.
