Driver stereotypes have been blown out of the water by new research released today, which revealed the average age of owners of 800 different cars.
Some stereotypes were reinforced, with the study by Tescocompare.com showing the average Porsche owner is in mid-life crisis territory at 39 years old.
But mature motorists aren't falling for the reliable image of Toyota, Honda or Nissan; with the average driver of the 'archetypal granny-car' the Nissan Micra a sprightly 35.
Commenting on the research, Paul Baxter of Tescocompare.com said: "This research has thrown up some surprising results - with cars we think are normally owned by the young having a surprisingly high typical age and vice-versa.
"It seems the image of the driver created by car manufacturing advertising campaigns is not always the reality."
Driver stereotypes are commonplace in the UK, with Leicester University's - cap professor Graham Davies showing some car brands are perceived to be "more aggressive" than others.
Former London mayor Ken Livingstone hit the headlines when he branded 4x4 drivers "idiots", saying they had no place in the city.
