'Smart driving tips' found to save money

Car loans customers might be interested to hear that some driving tips have produced money-saving results.

The Energy Saving Trust recently ran the Ford Smart Driving Challenge, which involved 500 motorists at seven locations who were instructed on "smart" techniques.

First they established "smooth driving skills" and recorded the carbon dioxide (CO2) output of each vehicle. This was followed by "eco-driving instruction" and another CO2 measurement.

The smoother style of driving is aimed at avoiding wasteful braking and acceleration, switching off the engine when it is safe to do so and travelling with as little extra weight as possible.

It was found that the fuel saved following the deployment of the "smart" advice was equal to an annual cost saving of £325 per motorist, with associated CO2 improvements of 22.5 per cent.

"The combination of economical cars driven frugally can have a dramatic impact," commented Roelant de Waard, chairman and managing director of Ford of Britain.

Those who are interested in reducing their carbon footprint might also want to consider purchasing a hybrid car.
