'Safety features should be fitted as standard'

Euro NCAP has said it is disappointed that Electronic Stability Control (ESC) – the best safety development since the seat belt – is not being fitted as standard.

The safety standards agency said that a greater effort is needed to ensure ESC is fitted as standard on new cars.

ESC automatically applies small amounts of braking pressure to prevent skidding and loss of control when the brakes are applied suddenly.

Michiel van Ratingen, secretary general of Euro NCAP, said: "Considering that ESC is the most effective safety device since the seat belt, no car buyer should have to bargain over it.

"A greater effort to make ESC fitment standard across the board is required."

Car credit customers may be interested to know that some manufacturers are increasing the number of cars they fit with ESC as standard, such as Ford, Hyundai, Mazda and Mitsubishi.

Recent studies in America have shown that ESC could reduce the number of fatal or serious crashes by 43 per cent.

And ESC reduces the risk of a single-vehicle rollover by 77 per cent in cars and by 80 per cent in SUVs.
