Youngsters who have been put off taking out a car loan to buy a vehicle because they do not think they will be able to afford to insure it may find owning a motor is not beyond their reach after all, the Association of British Insurers (ABI) has suggested.
The group acknowledged cover is more expensive for people under a certain age but it stated there were steps motorists could take to ensure they got the best possible deal.
Malcolm Tarling from ABI said in the first instance youngsters had to be realistic about the kind of model they were going to buy.
He claimed: "There is no point in spending all your money on the car of your dreams if you can't afford to run it and if you can't afford to insure it."
Mr Tarling added it was vital young drivers shopped around for cover as it is a competitive market with a wide range of policies to be found.
Elsewhere, the Independent reported drivers aged under 25 can expect to pay upwards of £1,500 for car insurance.
